This book was produced to mark the town's centennial. It's founding in 1864 following the Waikato land wars with the establishment of a military outpost named Camp Cambridge. This name is generally accepted to be related to the English city of that name, but in fact, the name came from Queen Victotria's cousin, the Duke of Cambridge, at that time Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. However, the association with the English city seems logical today as NZ's Cambridge presents a quaint and attractive setting reminiscent of smaller towns in the "old Country." The book does, however, add significantly to the history of the town and its surrounding area, the rich agricultural country of the Waikato, famed for its dairy herds, its racehorses and its association with major sports in NZ. Complementary it may be, but the book provides a major contribution to recalling the past development of the town and district, particularly notable for its fine collection of illustrations.
