" ... The following is a record of the major operators of sawmills and tramways based in the Mamaku area. Rotorua, Minginui and Te Whaiti sawmills have been included as they mainly sent timber to market using the same outlet -- Rotorua Branch Railway. There were also firewood contractors and post splitters. In the 1950s, with improvements in road transport, it became possible to build sawmills close to urban areas rather than beside forests and to use logging and cartage contractors who were independent of the sawmiller. Mills built specifically to handle exotic logs have not been included and there were many operations about which it has been impossible to find details."
