New Zealand's unique wildlife through the eyes of the artist

Pauline Morse is one of New Zealand's leading wildlife artists. After graduating from university in 1973, she joined the New Zealand Wildlife Service as a technician. Thus, she was able to channel what had been an overall interest in nature into the specialised study of various species.

Her work is now widely recognised, she has designed four series of stamps for New Zealand Post; over 376 million examples of which have been placed on envelopes.. She was awarded the title of "New Zealand Wildlife Artist of The Year" by Ducks Unlimited New Zealand, in 1992, for her study of a pair of endangered brown teal. The Bank of New Zealand commissioned her to paint the New Zealand kiwi for their Kiwi account fund. New Zealand's Forest and Bird Society used her study of the black robin to raise funds for the protection of the black robin.

All of her paintings are exquisitely detailed. This is in part, a reflection of her scientific background but also the result of her lifetime interest in poking and prying at objects collected from nature.

In this book are reproduced examples of her paintings featuring New Zealand's unique wildlife, including the original paintings used for some very familiar stamps. Many color plates of her work and text aboutbirds, butterflies and other animals.
